Assessors' Office Responsibility

The Assessors' Office is responsible for administering Massachusetts property tax laws effectively and equitably. The taxable property would include not only real estate but also the personal property of businesses as well. The motor vehicle excise tax is also administered through the Assessors' Office. The Board of Assessors determines the assessment of each property in the town and classifies each property according to its use for residential, commercial, Industrial, or Personal Property. This information is used by the Town Council to determine the Classification Shift between residential and business properties each year. On November 22, 2021, the Town Council adopted a 1.75% classification shift for the Fiscal Year 2022.
